Paul, I see Chris and Wallis' use of the no. of times a word is referenced in Scripture as more a rhetorical device to get people's attention than a substantial argument for how then shall we live...
Saw you on the tube -- interviewed on FOX in which you proposed that the "young evangelicals" are moving away from issues such as abortion and homosexuality and toward poverty as an issue of principal concern. Your rationale was that scripture only mentions homosexuality a handful of times and abortion not at all. In contrast, poverty and the poor are mentioned in scripture 2,000 times. Hence the shift in your (and young evangelical's) focus.
In all due respect, that's just lame, and not even poor exegesis. Using this approach to biblical application, I suspect you'll be re-instituting animal sacrifices just as soon as you complete the building of your tabernacle? After all, these two issues are mentioned in scripture even more than the poor -- who we will always have among us.
While I agree that compassion toward the poor and weak (some of whom are still living in the womb, by the way) is important, culling through historical christian dogma based upon the number of times the doctrine is mentioned in scripture is weak. Unless you're also prepared to jettison the doctrine of the trinity, for example, I suggest you re-think your position on how you use scripture to buttress your positions.
