Recovering Evangelical

J. Christopher LaTondresse

What do you think of Rich Cizik's recent dismissal from the National Association of Evangelicals?

This is a serious departure from where the NAE stood just two years ago, when they vigorously defended Cizik against those who wanted him fired for 'distracting churchgoers from core moral values issues' (i.e. gay-marriage and abortion) by focusing on global warming and poverty. That was a high water mark for the NAE.

Now they've pulled the rug out from under him. On NPR's Fresh Air with Terry Gross, Cizik admitted voting for Barack Obama in the primaries and confessed his support for civil-unions.

A sad commentary on the state of the evangelical movement in America. I had hoped we were further along than this.

Well, it's a "victory" for Focus on the Family types, but not necessarily a substantial victory.

I support civil unions because I believe there is biblical support for a distinction between the God-given ideal of Marriage and the human-made cultural customs surrounding marriages that inevitably accomodate human fallenness.

So I can support gay civil unions without it affecting my understanding of the Bible and its authority one whit.

I had a great post that led to a good dialogue with a gay-rights activist friend of mine over at my blog, the Anti-Manichaeist.

Peeving both sides comes with the territory when you're an anti-manichaeist.

Jesus daid "they hated me first" and he wasn't talking about the Romans. He was talking about his religious contemporaries. It will not be the gays or the atheist or any other non religious group that attacks Christ likeness. It will always be the most profoundly religious. And get used to being in the extreme minority. Real faith is always met with fear and hatred by the masses. In Jesus' day there were a handfull of Pharasee's and experts in the law that had real faith. And I'd be willing to bet they wondered why the rest didn't "get" Jesus. Rich Cizik is in good company.

I guess I'd like to send a letter to the NAE, asking that they allow for diffs of opinions on this matter among the membership, and frame Cizik's dismissal as because he overstepped a line they thought was necessary for a representative of the NAE to mind.

Cizik should be at least allowed to remain in the NAE, even if his activism takes a different venue.

permitting gay civil unions ain't the same thing as the key problematic features of the LBGT movements: (1) Biological Determinism (My Genes Make Me Do It!) (2) Sexual Libertinism (All You Need is Love/An Ass is an Ass is an Ass...)

So what's next for Cizik, besides maybe posting here under the name, "Recovering Evangelical"???
